The key to success for any aspiring pianist lies in not just finding a good teacher, but finding the right one.

Our mission is to assist you in discovering and mastering the music you love, developing your own interpretations, and, ultimately, cultivating your unique musical voice.

Dr. Voia-Tipei is an extraordinary pianist and instructor. We have had our daughter train with him for a few years now and have nothing but praise. Best instructor, hands down.
Abe Liou · Parent of a student
Paul magically makes our energetic boy sit on the bench calmly and attentively, training his hands and inspiring his mind, for at least 45 minutes. After every lesson, we could tell our son has had another amazing journey.
Yuanyuan Feng · Parent of a student
I've had the privilege of taking lessons from Dr. Paul for the last two years. His depth of musicality and knowledge goes beyond all teachers I've taken lessons with before. He is friendly and encouraging, but not afraid to tell you when you need to work harder.
Jacob Counts · Adult student
Paul is a wonderful award-winning teacher. My two daughters have incredible success learning from him. He is patient, super talented, and teaches university-level students as well.

Music theory study at PVT Studio

Lessons

Built around you, not a template.

Because the one-on-one teaching context allows for individualized learning paths, it results in better outcomes and a more satisfying experience. The emphasis can move from fundamental concepts and the principles of interpretation, to repertoire in its historical context, to intangibles like meaning, direction, and vision; endless, yet effectively tailored.

Three threads, woven to fit

Piano technique at PVT Studio

Piano

Build a technique that serves expression, learning to communicate consistently and freely at the instrument, from first contact with the keys to the most demanding repertoire.

Music theory study at PVT Studio

Theory

Unlock your musical understanding by studying the language itself (harmony, form, and the inner logic of the music you play), so the score becomes something you read, not just decode.

Composition and music production at PVT Studio

Composition & Production

Create, explore, and discover new ways of engaging with sound, from writing your own music to producing it, turning the instrument into a tool for your own ideas.

Common questions

Do you teach complete beginners and adults?+
Yes. Beginners, returning students, and advanced players are all welcome, and adults starting from zero are a real part of the studio. The same fundamental principles run through every level, from the very first lesson through the most advanced repertoire; the work of teaching is figuring out where you are, filling in what needs to be filled, and providing the tools for a complete playing experience.
What happens in a free trial lesson?+
We meet, talk through your background and goals, and (depending on the student) work through a short sample of a lesson based on what I think needs attention. You get both a diagnosis and a feel for how we work, with time at the end for any remaining questions. There is no cost and no obligation; it is how we both decide whether the fit is right.
Can you prepare students for Certificate of Merit or college auditions?+
Yes. Instruction can be oriented toward evaluations, recitals, competitions, recordings, and college or conservatory audition preparation, or kept entirely focused on personal goals if that is what you are after.
How long and how often are lessons?+
Lessons are private, one-on-one, and scheduled weekly at a reserved time held just for you. They run in 30-, 45-, or 60-minute lengths; the right one for the student is something we sort out together at the free trial.
What do I need at home for practice?+
A working piano or a full-sized, weighted keyboard. An acoustic piano is strongly preferred since it supports proper technique and tone. A quiet, designated practice space with good lighting and seating helps too. Regular practice between lessons is necessary for progress; we work out individual practice strategies during lessons.

The Schimmel Konzert Series grand piano at PVT Studio, Pasadena

The Studio

A concert-quality experience, every lesson.

In the heart of Pasadena, the studio is built for sound. Small-hall acoustics give every lesson the clarity and presence of a recital space; what you hear under your hands is the real thing, not an approximation.

Two concert instruments

At the center of the studio is a German-crafted Schimmel Konzert Series grand, joined by a Baldwin L. These are concert instruments, and they shape how you learn: the touch, the tone, and the listening they demand carry directly into your own playing.

About

Dr. Paul Voia-Tipei

Pianist, improviser, educator, builder.

Dr. Paul Voia-Tipei with his wife Simona

Paul is a pianist and improviser by training, an educator by trade, and a builder by instinct.

Born in Arad, Romania in 1987, Paul studied at the School of Music "Sabin Dragoi" under Professor Ana Raita. He won prizes at the Pro Piano International Competition in Bucharest and the Carl Filtsch International Piano Competition in Sibiu before moving to Phoenix in 2005, where he took first place in the Arizona Piano-Schimmel Young Artist Competition's Concerto Division and went on to perform Beethoven's Third Piano Concerto with the ASU Symphony in 2013.

He has performed across Spain, France, Switzerland, Italy, Hungary, Serbia, Romania, and the United States, appearing with orchestras at venues including Mesa Arts Center, Scottsdale Arts Center, and Steinway galleries throughout the country.

Although rooted in classical music, Paul has a vast understanding of music and a remarkable versatility at the piano. His work spans pit orchestras, electronic music, jazz, solo performances, and contemporary compositions. He believes a great piano teacher should be familiar with both the concert stage and the teaching profession, considering them intertwined.

Paul holds a DMA in Piano Performance from USC Thornton School of Music, where he studied under Daniel Pollack, with prior degrees from USC Thornton and ASU Herberger Institute. Along the way he studied with Dana Borsan, Sorin Dogariu, Jeffrey Kahane, Kevin Fitz-Gerald, Mike Kocour, Otmaro Ruiz, and Russell Ferrante.

He currently serves as Adjunct Professor at the Paul T. Plew School of Music at The Master's University in Santa Clarita, alongside his private studio in Pasadena. He lives in Pasadena with his wife Simona and daughter Eloise.

Common questions

How does monthly tuition work?+
Tuition is a flat monthly rate, billed in advance on the 1st of each month. The rate already accounts for studio closures and for the changing number of lessons in a given month, so it does not go up in a five-lesson month or down in a month with a closure.
What is your cancellation and make-up policy?+
When you enroll, you reserve a fixed weekly slot that is held open for you and prepared for in advance, so a missed lesson is time that cannot be recovered. Lessons cancelled more than 24 hours ahead are made up at a time that works for both of us, or applied as a credit to the following month. Lessons cancelled with less than 24 hours' notice, or no-shows, are forfeited. A make-up lesson that is itself missed cannot be made up a second time.
What about conflicts?+
Exceptions to the cancellation policy are considered case by case for scheduling conflicts, school conflicts, prolonged illness, and other extenuating circumstances. Weather closures default to a virtual lesson at the regular time.
When is the studio closed?+
The studio closes for the first week of the year, the week of Thanksgiving, the week of Christmas, and one week each summer (announced in advance). The flat monthly tuition rate already accounts for these closures, so billing does not change during closure weeks.

Students & Families

What people say after the playing starts.

We recently switched to Paul after my daughter had been with the same piano teacher for nearly 10 years. She had lost a lot of her motivation. Since starting lessons with Paul, it's like a spark has been reignited. She's making amazing progress, and we're honestly blown away by how much her playing has improved in such a short time.
Nikoo Berenji · Parent of a student
Dr. Voia-Tipei is an extraordinary pianist and instructor. We have had our daughter train with him for a few years now and have nothing but praise. Best instructor, hands down. Also, super cool guy.

Jacob Counts · Adult student
Paul is an exceptional teacher. He's been teaching our 8-year-old daughter since she was 6. We've tried several other teachers before, but none of them showed the same level of passion and enthusiasm as Paul. He tests and challenges her, and the lessons are always tailored to her learning style.
Rhyan L. · Parent of a student
Paul is a wonderful award-winning teacher. My two daughters have incredible success learning from him. He is patient, super talented, and teaches university-level students as well. I'm starting my Jazz improv skills with Paul. Highly recommend.
Sam · Parent and adult student
